Notes for organizers for the in-person event
Introduction: “Gib was VP of Product at Netflix starting in 2005. In 2010, he became the CPO of Chegg, a textbook rental and homework help company that went public in 2014. Today, Gib is a teacher, speaker, and adviser.”
My setup: I prefer to plug in my own machine (running Slido requires my password credentials) and I have a dongle to attach to a monitor or projector via HDMI. I have no video or audio in my presentation. I assume there’s good wireless internet as I use Google Slides with Slido polling which is “live.” I also assume the audience in the room has reasonable mobile access (via in-room wireless or cell service) as the in-person audience will participate in the polling.
Monitor: I like to be able to see my slides via a monitor without turning my head to look at the screen. The monitor should mirror my slides as I don’t use any notes. It’s also helpful if there’s a clock visible somewhere in the room, although I will wear a watch.
Notes on timing: I use cases and sometimes I get a little behind— an engaged audience drives things a little longer. That’s ok, as I can make up the timing later and will finish within a minute or two of the scheduled time.
Notes for organizers for the virtual audience
If there’s a chat/messaging function for the virtual event:
In the beginning, please share this link with the audience to enable Slido polling: https://app.sli.do/event/0e5ojrs4
At the end of the talk, please share this link to gather feedback: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ProdStratYoslo2hours
At the very end (right after the feedback link above), share the link to this page: https://www.gibsonbiddle.com/yoslo2
I don’t plan to use a second machine, so it would be good if someone in the room monitors the virtual experience to make sure it works. I assume there will be no more than 10-second lag, which is fine for Slido polling, etc.
If there’s a producer managing what the virtual audience sees, make sure the full presentation screen is available when I am asking for feedback using Slido.
Q & A. I gather questions via Slido, and folks are welcome to upvote them, but there isn’t time to answer questions. I do, however, answer all questions eventually via my “Ask Gib” essays and the questions are super helpful to me— they help me to isolate what I failed to communicate. Pro tip: Q and A is very helpful to the person asking the question, but half the time the question/answer is not relevant to all, so it’s not “high bang for the buck” given limited time.
